Some Important basics of generating traffic on your website

There’s no doubt that everyone is fighting in the game of optimizing their websites for various search engines. Thousands of dollars worth content is written and sold regarding search engine optimization. You must have received thousands of emails with flashing and blinking advertisements of “Get 1000 backlinks for just $9.99”. Similarly, there are a number of e-books which are sold for thousands of dollars. These e-books are said to contain all the hidden secrets of optimizing your website or blog for Google or Yahoo search engines. Though the practical and proven benefits of using such programs and e-books are not that much clarified and open, but still these programs, e-books, newsletters and email alerts worth thousands of dollars.

At first place, you should understand that just getting a website and popping it up with affiliate advertisements and pay per click advertisements will never generate any money for you. Your website is 100% like your physical office business. Just consider yourself as a owner of small grocery store. You have just established your grocery store, and have filled it with almost all of the stuff you could think. You have also spent hundreds of dollars on buying the property, constructing it, and putting all the furniture and grocery stuff in it. But, there is not a single buyer nearby and you are not making a single dollar. Why? Well, there can be a number of reasons.

You might have forgotten to place a big board outside your grocery store, due to which people are unable to determine what store is this. You might not have advertised the opening of your grocery store in newspapers and magazines and pamphlets. Well, in simple words, there can be thousands of reasons why you are not generating any revenues from your costly business. Similar is the case with your online home based business; i.e. your website or blog.

A website or a blog is much similar to your real world business and you will have to handle it almost equally in order to get your desired business and desired revenues. Once created a website, your immediate next step should be advertising it and generating traffic to it.

There are two ways of generating traffic on a website (with respect to money):

1) Paid methods

2) Free methods

Paid method:

Paid methods generate guaranteed traffic on your websites. One of the most popular paid methods of website marketing is Google Adwords. Here you assign a budget to your website, and Google allocates your budget at various publishers’ websites and turn your invested money into your visitors. Now, making these first visitors as regular and returning visitors is the responsibility of your blog or website. If you are skilled and talented enough in choosing a niche and handling it the best way, you can really make your first time visitor a returning and consistent visitor. And, always remember that regular visitors generate revenues for you through your website or blog.

Free method:

Contrary to paid methods, free methods employ search engine optimization techniques to improve the page rank of the website or blog in search results. Whenever you search a keyword on Google and click the first few results, it does not cost the visited website. But, it requires a lot of effort to appear at the first few pages of Google and Yahoo search engines for some specific keywords. Say, for example, your website is about pet dogs. Now, you will have to employ probably more than one thousands tricks and techniques that will make your page rank better on Google and Yahoo. Even after that, you are not assured that your result will appear as the first one for ‘pet dogs’ keyword search.
